Retracking Process
The retracking process is shown in the diagram below. The retracker model, highlighted with the dark black edge below, is derived based on several assumptions, as described in the Derivation Diagram. The model is fit using some input parameters (determined independently), such as the antenna beamwidth parameter, gamma, and the modified satellite altitude, H_m and with some free parameters fitted empirically (the mispointing angle xi, the epoch t_0, the standard deviation of ocean heights, sigma_c and the amplitude A).
These fit parameters are corrected through look up tables that account for (and therefore reduce the impact of) some of the assumptions in the derivation, and are then further processed to give the main retracker parameters, the range, significant wave height (SWH), Pu power (which will later become sigma_0), and the mispointing angle beta. In this, the range is corrected according to the processes described in Altimeter Corrections.
